Barbell plate calculator

Exact plates per side, constrained by the inventory in front of you.

Enter the total weight you want on the bar and this calculator finds the exact plates per side — constrained by the inventory your gym actually has, not a generic chart.

how the plate search works

Choose an exact competition, commercial-gym, or US-pound preset, edit every per-side count, and ask for the nearest load, the nearest load that does not exceed the target, or the lightest load that reaches it.

  1. Target total includes the bar. LiftGauge subtracts the selected bar, splits the remaining load equally, then searches only the plate pairs you marked as available.
  2. Exact means exact. Decimal weights are converted to integer thousandths before the bounded search, avoiding floating-point guesses around 1.25 kg and 2.5 lb plates.
  3. Nearest has a deterministic tie-break. The smallest absolute difference wins; ties prefer fewer plates, then the load at or below target. Floor and ceiling modes enforce their direction.

frequently asked

How many plates per side do I need?
Enter the full target weight and bar weight. The result lists every plate per side from the collar outward, plus the achieved total and any difference from your target.
Does the calculator support pounds and kilograms?
Yes. Choose kg or lb and the target, bar, and current inventory convert together. The presets include competition kg plates, a typical commercial-gym kg inventory, and US pound plates with a 45 lb bar.
What if my gym does not have enough plates?
Edit each per-side count to match the rack. Nearest mode finds the closest load the inventory can build; floor mode never exceeds your target; ceiling mode finds the lightest available load at or above it.
Does the plate calculator include collars?
Not as a hidden assumption. Put the weight you want treated as the bar into the bar field: 20 kg for a standard men's bar, 15 kg for a standard women's bar, or bar plus collars if you want collars included.
