Powerlifting weight class calculator

IPF and USAPL classes, margin to the class above, distance above the class below.

Enter your bodyweight to find your current IPF or USAPL powerlifting weight class, how much room you have before outgrowing it, and how far you are above the class below. Pick a federation, sex, and unit, then add your age only if you compete Sub-Junior, Junior, or under-14 Youth — every other age uses the standard adult table. Class boundaries are published in kilograms with an inclusive upper bound; the next class always starts 0.01 kg higher. Pounds are shown as a calculated conversion at the exact 0.45359237 kg/lb factor, not a separate federation-defined pound class. This tool reports the numbers only — it never suggests cutting weight.

Shown above: IPF Open/Masters, the default selection. Switching federation, sex, or age rebuilds both tables in place — USAPL adds five more classes per sex plus Youth classes under 14; IPF Sub-Junior/Junior (age 14–23) adds one extra lowest class.

how classification works

  1. Bodyweight decides the class, always in kilograms. Both federations publish their tables in kilograms; the upper bound of a class is inclusive, and the next class begins 0.01 kg higher. This calculator rounds your entered weight to the nearest 0.01 kg before comparing it against the table, matching the precision the rulebooks use.
  2. Pounds are a calculated conversion, not a federation rule. Enter your weight in lb and it converts at the exact 0.45359237 kg/lb factor before classification. The pound ranges shown alongside each class are the same conversion, labeled for reference.
  3. Age only matters for two narrow gates. IPF ages 14–23 unlock one extra lowest class; USAPL ages under 14 unlock the Youth classes. Every other age, and no age at all, uses the standard adult/Open table.
  4. Margin up and distance down describe room, not advice. This calculator never recommends cutting weight; it only reports the arithmetic distance to the class boundaries around you.

method notes

IPF weigh-in opens no earlier than 2 hours before your session and runs for 90 minutes (IPF Technical Rulebook 2026, effective 2026-03-01, §5 Weighing In). USAPL weigh-in also opens 2 hours before your session and runs 90 minutes, with a mandatory 30-minute gap between the end of weigh-in and the start of lifting (USAPL Rulebook v2026.2, §5.1). Both rulebooks define age divisions by calendar year or exact birthdate rather than a single age-in-years number — treat the Sub-Junior/Junior and Youth results here as a close approximation and confirm your division with your federation registration.

frequently asked

Which powerlifting weight classes does this calculator use?
IPF Open and Masters classes (8 per sex, plus one extra Sub-Junior/Junior class), and USAPL classes (12 adult classes per sex, plus extra Youth classes under 14). Both federations define classes in kilograms; pounds are shown as a calculated conversion.
How are the class boundaries decided at an exact number?
Both rulebooks make the upper bound inclusive and start the next class at one hundredth of a kilogram higher — for example the IPF 66 kg class runs up to 66.00 kg, and 66.01 kg is already in the 74 kg class. This calculator classifies on your bodyweight rounded to the nearest 0.01 kg, the same precision the rulebooks use.
Does entering my weight in pounds change my class?
No — pounds are converted to kilograms at the exact factor 0.45359237 kg per lb, rounded to the nearest 0.01 kg, then classified on the rulebook's kilogram table. The pound ranges shown in the table are a calculated conversion for reference, not a separate federation-defined pound class.
What does age do here?
For IPF, entering an age from 14 to 23 unlocks the Sub-Junior/Junior extra lowest class (53 kg men, 43 kg women); every other age uses the same 8-class Open/Masters table. For USAPL, entering an age under 14 unlocks the Youth classes below the adult table; everyone 14 and older — Teen, Junior, Open, Master — shares one adult table. Leave age blank for the standard adult table.
Is the age check exact?
It is a documented simplification. Both federations define age eligibility by calendar year or exact birthdate, not a single age-in-years number. Treat the Sub-Junior/Junior and Youth results as a close approximation and confirm your division with your federation registration.
What is margin up and distance down?
Margin up is how much bodyweight is left before you outgrow your current class and move to the next one up. Distance down is how far above the next lower class's ceiling you currently are — the amount you would need to cut to just reach that class. Neither number is a recommendation to cut weight.
